Supporting Healthy Emotions At Home and On The Road with Essential Oils

Are you having one of those day? You know . . . the world around you is bright and shining, but somehow you don’t feel as shiny as you’d like.

Trust me, I get it! We all have those days. Hopefully not too often. Although sometimes a day can turn into a week, that turns into a month, and we wonder why we are still down in the dumps.

Today, I’m here to offer you some hope.

As an entrepreneur, author, singer, and adventurist, there have been many up and down days. When I’m home working on a new business endeavor and the horizon is beaming with color, I dream of being on a boat in the Mediterranean rather than sitting at my desk. When Christmas time rolls around each year and I’m practicing music and event planning for hours each day, the joys and the stresses of performance come knocking on the door.

Thankfully, there’s one element of stability I know I can count on — my essential oils.

Now, before you start thinking I’m all woo-woo, know that I do have other coping mechanisms. A good brisk walk, horseback ride, prayer time, journaling, and a warm bubble bath are all acceptable ways to be in the moment and create space to process. What are your coping mechanisms? (think … think)

One of the beauties of incorporating essential oils into an emotional health routine is that you know what you’re getting. You’re getting fragrance, combined with a moment of calm and focus, that enables you to process feelings, thoughts, and emotions. Processing is powerful!

DID YOU KNOW . . .

When you inhale an essential oil, the fragrant molecules signal the limbic region of the brain to access emotions that it has stored.

Sometimes these emotions — particularly older emotional memories — are stored elsewhere in the body.

Your brain actually sends emotional memories to other parts of the body to be stored.

WOW, right!

And inhaling an essential oil can trigger the brain to go find the memory.

Obviously, you don’t just want to go digging through all the catalogs of stored emotional memory, because chances are, you’ll uncover some things you’d rather leave stored away for the time being. However, your brain works for you. When you ask it to recall a specific memory, it will go looking for just that specific one.

The Feelings Protocol, created by D. Gary Young, is a wonderful protocol to use when you want to process current or past emotions and memories.

It’s a simple protocol using just six essential oils blends, including:

  • Valor — renowned for its strengthening qualities and ability to align energy centers in the body.

  • Harmony — brings a harmonic balance to the energy centers of the body.

  • Forgiveness — allows the release of harmful memories and promotes a willingness to move forward.

  • Present Time — allows you to see your life’s future with an open mind for new possibilities.

  • Release — promotes feelings of harmony and balance of the mind and body.

  • Inner Child — brings feelings of stimulating memory responses and helps you reconnect with your innocence.

  • (Repeat) Valor — to lock in the feelings of balance and completeness.

These wonderful essential oils can become part of your weekly or even daily emotional support routine. As outlined in my book “Healthy Traveler’s Guide: Essential Oils For Travel” in the Emotional Support section, here is how I recommend using these essential oil blends in a protocol.

THE FEELINGS PROTOCOL EXPLAINED

*with additional explanation and direction from Elizabeth Rose*

Step 1: Apply 1–3 drops of Valor to the bottom of each foot. Pray for courage to step into ultimate freedom.

Step 2: Close your eyes and assess where your body is holding negative energy. Apply 1–2 drops of Harmony to the correlating energy point. Instruct your body to come into harmony with God’s best for you in this moment.

Step 3: Apply 1–3 drops of Forgiveness to the navel. Prayerfully forgive yourself and others who have hurt you.

Step 4: Apply Present Time to the wrists and behind the ears. Allow yourself to be present in this moment, not reaching into the past or striving towards the future.

Step 5: Apply Release over the liver. Ask yourself what emotions you need to let go of – anger, hurt, resentment, frustration, doubt. Hold your hands out in front of you and in a symbolic motion, take those things out of your heart and place them in your hands. Then ask God to take them from you and thank God for freedom.

Step 6: Rub 1–2 drops of Inner Child just under the nose. Prayerfully allow yourself to connect with your child-like innocence, joy, hope, and laughter. Give yourself a hug.

Step 7: Reapply Valor as a way to solidify and complete the process. Finish with a prayer of thanksgiving.
