Five Essential Oil Uses For A Pregnant Mother

If you’ve never used essential oils before, but have recently heard that they are helpful for things like occasional nausea and sleep support, then you’ve come to the right place. Essential oils are actually very safe and effective to use in small amounts while pregnant. Just 1-3 drops is enough for an application. This means that one bottle of oil will last you a long time and is very cost effective.

There are a few essential oils that are recommended to not use while pregnant, attempting to get pregnant or in labor. I will mention those below. However, there are so many essential oils that are on the safe list. Mothers around the world are using pure essential oils with great effectiveness for a wide variety of reasons.

When it comes to purity, not all essential oils are equal. I only recommend the Young Living Essential Oil brand due to how the oils are regulated with their Seed To Seal quality standards. Lavender was the first oil she ever used while she was pregnant with my younger brother, Joseph. She raised three children and taught each of us safe uses for essential oils and still to this day we all use oils on a daily basis.

I truly feel that part of the legacy my mother gave use children is the “legacy of natural healthcare”. Three main ways to use essential oils

  • Aromatherapy: Using a cold air diffuser, simply add water and a few drops of oils and diffuse for a desired amount of time. Apply 1-2 drops in the palm of your hand and rub hands together and place over the nose and inhale for as long as desired.

  • Topical: Just a few drops of essential oil diluted in V-6 mixing oil, coconut oil or olive oil is a very simple way to use essential oils topically. By mixing an essential oil with a “fattier” or larger molecule oil such as coconut oil, the effect is that the essential oil absorbs into the skin slower, allowing the body to process the oil and it’s also more gentle on the skin. It is advised to always dilute an oil when used topically during pregnancy. Oils are oftentimes applied to the feet and down the spine, on the chest and back of the neck.

  • Internal: It is not generally recommended to use oils internally during pregnancy. When not pregnant, many individuals use Young Living’s Vitality oils such as Peppermint Vitality and DiGize Vitality adding 1-2 drops to water or a few drops in a vegetable capsule and take as a dietary supplement to support digestive health.


Which Oils To Use For What

So you’re probably wondering which oils do what. Well, here we go! And keep I mind that each oil has multiple uses. More than likely you will find that the oils mentioned can help your body in more ways than one. It’s fun experimenting using one oil - in moderation - in multiple ways.

OCCASSIONAL NAUSEA AND UPSET TUMMY

Lemon oil is a great option if you’re dealing with nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. A 2014 study in pregnant women showed that, when used consistently in aromatherapy, lemon oil reduced the frequency of nausea and vomiting. Try inhaling it directly from the bottle, putting a drop in the palm of your hands and cupping hands over nose to inhale, or diffusing.

AromaEase™ essential oil blend is a combination of Peppermint, Spearmint, Ginger, Cardamom, and Fennel. This combination creates an aroma that is minty, sweet, and soothing and offers support during times of uneasiness in daily life or when you are traveling. HAPPY SLEEPING

Lavender essential oil is known by many as the most universal essential oil. It has properties that support radiant looking skin, relaxation, healthy digestion, sore muscles and so much more. It is widely used aromatically, topically, or as a dietary supplement. Although it is still not recommended to take internally when pregnant, there are so many uses.

  • Diffuse: add to a cold air diffuser and enjoy the aroma wafting throughout your home or workplace

  • Room Spray: Add 10-20 drops to 4 ounces of water and spritz onto bed sheets for a calming and relaxing arroma

  • Topical: Apply 1-3 drops to the bottoms of each foot. Add a few drops to Young Living’s V-6 Mixing Oil for a relaxing massage. Mix a few drops of Lavender in with coconut oil and vitamin E oil and apply to areas prone to getting stretch marks.

  • Bath Time: Add 4 drops of Lavender and 1 cup of Epsom salt to a bath to create a relaxing environment.

German Chamomile essential oil offers a calming aroma that creates a tranquil atmosphere when diffused. Try applying it to the bottoms of the feet before nap time or bedtime. Similar to Lavender, it can be soothing to the skin and helpful when applied to areas prone to stretch marks.

Fun Fact: German Chamomile is also known as blue chamomile, as it contains the naturally occurring constituent chamazulene that gives the essential oil a deeply rich blue color. German Chamomile essential oil has been used in herbal remedies for thousands of years throughout ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Native to Southern and Western Europe and parts of Asia, German chamomile is a flowering perennial shrub in the Asteraceae family.
