Essential Oils 202 Usage Guide

DID YOU KNOW . . .

Essential Oils are steam distilled from roots, stems, leaves, flowers and bark. If you tear a leaf in half and see sap dropout of the cut, this is the liquid essential oil in its natural form. This liquid acts as the immune system of the plant, transporting nutrients and sustaining the life of the plant.

Now that you know more about essential oils than about 90% of people on the planet, it’s time to learn how to use the basic essential oils so that you can share with your friends!

28 years ago, a man named Gary Young set out on a mission to distill therapeutic grade essential oils for the specific usage of supporting the health of the human body naturally. Gary believed so much in the purity of essential oils that he made it his life’s work to buy land, plant crops, harvest, distill, bottle and sell therapeutic grade essential oils. The Seed To Seal quality standard for testing a grading essential oils was created and is now the primary standard for essential oil producers around the world.

To learn more about the three main ways to use essential oils, visit my blog “Essential Oils For Beginners”.

Today we are going to dive right in to the twelve basic oils that I recommend for every household to have in stock. Why? Because you sure don’t want to be out of an oil when you need it. AND, you want to have a few extra bottles on hand for when your friends are in need.

Thieves Vitality

Contains the single oils of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary.

Thieves Vitality helps support immune function and contributes to overall wellness when taken as a dietary supplement.

When you're feeling under the weather, place 1 drop in a glass of water and drink.

Add several drops to an empty vegetable capsule along with a little vegetable oil and take internally when feeling under the weather. It is especially common to take a capsule about every 4 hours for the first day in order to optimally support the body's natural functions.

To freshen your breath or help sooth a little tickle in the back of the throat, place 2-4 drops in water and gargle with it.

Support healthy gums by diluting 1 drop in a teaspoon of vegetable oil and using a swap, gently apply to the gums 2 times a day.

Enjoy a spicy, delicious drink by adding a drop to your morning cup of tea to give it a boost. *tip: if you add a little bit of half & half or cream to the tea then the essential oil will bond with it and emulsify throughout the cup rather than sitting on top.

Thieves

The thieves essential oil, when applied topically on the body can be a powerful support to overall health as well. Many people choose to apply 3 drops neat or diluted to the bottoms of their feet before bed. Thieves can be a bit of a "hot oil" and may need to be diluted with Young Living's V-6 Mixing oil or just your normal coconut oil or vegetable oil.

Citrus Fresh Vitality

This refreshing blend of citrus oils includes Orange, Grapefruit, Mandarin, Tangerine, Lemon, and Spearmint.

Try adding a drop to a glass of water throughout the day for a refreshing and cleansing effect.

1-2 drops is also a delicious addition to a morning smoothie or iced tea or hot tea.

This blend is also delicious when added to your favorite recipe such as fruit salad, salad dressing, and marinades to enhance the flavor.

Citrus Fresh

This blend adds a fresh and "happy" aroma to the air when diffused.

Try putting a few drops of Citrus Fresh on a wool dryer ball when drying clothes for a fresh smell.

These citrus oils and spearmint may also be emotionally uplifting and promote a sense of courage and lightheartedness.

Peppermint Vitality

Enjoy the bright, cool flavors of Peppermint Vitality essential oil as a flavoring agent and as a dietary supplement. Not only is it stimulating and refreshing, but it also can support gastrointestinal comfort and normal digestion.

Peppermint Vitality oil taken as a dietary supplement may support exercise performance to help you have a great workout.

Add 1-2 drops to your water bottle when going to the gym, or just during every activities.

Peppermint

When applied topically to the tummy area Peppermint essential oil has a very cooling and soothing effect. This can be helpful after a meal or when feeling a little nauseous.

Inhaling peppermint has been studied to support mental alertness.

Lemon Vitality

Add 1-2 drops to a glass of water ...  It's best to use glass rather than plastic, and never plastic water bottles because essential oils will absorb to the plastic and you'll have the lingering taste for a while.

Add a few drops to your favorite recipe.

*My amazing mother, Teri Secrest, wrote a cookbook called "Eating Out Of Heaven's Garden" where she includes several recipes that use vitality oils. You can find it at www.TeriSecrets.com

Lemon

Add 10 drops in your diffuser, or try a different diffuser blend such as 5 drops lemon and 5 drops Thieves

Add a few drops to a spray bottle with water and spritz on countertops or through the air for a refreshing smell.

Lemon can also help get out stains and tough-to-remove things like gum from clothing. Just apply a drop and do a little scrubbing.

DiGize Vitality

Contains the single oils of Tarragon, Ginger, Peppermint, Juniper, Fennel, Lemongrass, Anise and Patchouli.

Supports healthy digestion when taken as a dietary supplement in a capsule.

Supports gut health during international travel when taken by adding 1-2 drops to foods, beverages or a capsule.

TIP: when taking in a capsule, add the desired amount of essential oil and then a little bit of vegetable oil. This will help prevent burping up any undesirable tastes.

DiGize

DiGize can be applied topically to the tummy area for a soothing effect after eating a large meal.

Raven

This is a blend of Ravintsara, Peppermint, Eucalyptus Radiata, Lemon, and Wintergreen essential oils.

A chilly, minty blend with sweet undertones, Raven creates a cooling sensation and provides a comforting aroma when applied topically to the chest and throat. Like an effervescent breeze through a grove of eucalyptus trees, Raven provides a refreshing aromatic experience when diffused or inhaled directly. The naturally occurring constituents eucalyptol, menthol, and methyl salicylate provide an invigorating and empowering experience, particularly before or after a workout or when winding down for the evening.

Try applying 3-5 drops to neck and chest area to experience a freeing and light feeling while breathing.

Add to diffuser and run before bed or first thing in the morning to support normal breathing.

PanAway

This powerful blend contains Wintergreen, Helichrysum, Clove and Peppermint.

This blend is meant to support an active lifestyle by providing a warming effect on the skin after activity and is ideal for post-exercise application.

Apply 1-3 drops to back, neck, shoulders, feet, knees, or arms following physical exertion for a cooling, and stimulating sensation.

Lavender

Lavender is a very "universal oil" and has so many uses! When in doubt, keep lavender with you at all times.

When you are ready to relax in the afternoon, try putting a drop of Lavender in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together and then cup hands over your nose and inhale slowly. Do this for as long as desired.

At night, fill up a nice warm bath, take a cup of Epsom salt and add 3-5 drops of lavender. Mix together and then pour into bath for a relaxing soak.

After exposure to sun for long amounts of time, Lavender can be soothing to the skin. Take a spray bottle with about 2 ounces of water, add 5-10 drops of Lavender and spritz over affected areas. Continue spritzing on skin multiple times a day if needed.

If skin gets exposed to high heat and is uncomfortable, applying a drop of Lavender to the affected area can be soothing and supportive of healthy looking skin.

Try diffusing Lavender before bed at night or when you're ready to relax. Also applying 1-3 drops on the bottoms of each foot can promote a restful night sleep.

Lavender Vitality

Add a drop of Lavender Vitality to a spoonful of honey or a fresh glass of lemonade.

For occasional allergies try adding 3 drops Lavender Vitality, 3 drops Lemon Vitality, 3 drops Peppermint Vitality to an empty vegetable capsule with a little coconut oil and take once a day or when needed.

Frankincense (boswellia carteri)

Frankincense was considered more valuable than gold in ancient times and used by ancient cultures to ease many conditions. Scientists have studied it to examine antitumoral, immunostimulant, antidepressant, and muscle relaxing potential - as well as potential effects on the limbic system of the brain, and hypothalamus, pineal gland, and pituitary gland.

Frankincense is an exquisite addition to your facial lotion by just adding one drop to cover the entire face, or a few drops to cover the full body.

Combine 1-5 drops with V-6 Vegetable Oil (sold by Young Living) and massage muscles after exercise.

Apply topically over the lung area for seasonal support and normal lung function.

Apply 1-3 drops on back of neck to maintain concentration and uplift your spirits.

Frankincense Vitality

Place 2-3 drops of Frankincense Vitality in a capsule with carrier oil to support well-being and normal cellular health.

Place 1-2 drops of Frankincense Vitality under the tongue to support normal cellular health and immune system.

Valor

This is a very grounding a stabilizing blend emotionally and physically. It contains Black Spruce, Campor, Blue Tansy, Frankincense, and Geranium.

Valor is the perfect oil to apply to the bottoms of the feet upon waking up in the morning. Then just relax for a few minutes before getting up to start the day.

Before a massage or chiropractic adjustment, apply Valor to the bottoms of feet and down the spine.

Valor features a spicy, sweet, positive aroma that inspires confidence and courage. It helps creates a grounded environment for meditation.

Peace & Calming

This blend fulfills its name very well. It includes Tangerine, Orange, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, and Black Tansy.

Peace & Calming is wonderful to apply to the bottoms of feet at night as part of a bedtime regime for your whole family.

Use it as a perfume and apply to wrists and neck.

Inhale as often as needed for that peaceful feeling.

Add 4-5 drops to 1 cup of Epsom salt for a bath at the start of the day or part of a calming evening routine.

Stress Away

Take it for the name ... Stress Awayyyyyy ...

This blend contains Copaibba, Lime, Cedarwood, *Vanilla, Ocotea, and Lavender. **Vanilla is an absolute or essence rather than an essential oil.

This is the perfect oil to replace the dropper top with a roller top for easier roll-on application. NOTE: To easily add your roller filament, remove the cap and gently pry off the plastic reducer. Top in the roller filament, then replace the black cap and screw tightly. As the lid is being screwed on it will push the roller filament into place.

Roll on wrists, back of neck and shoulders, and temples as needed throughout the day.

Diffuse during stressful times of the day to promote a more relaxing atmosphere.
