Essential Oil For Animal Care

If you’re looking for the best resource on how to use essential oils with animals, you have come to the right place!

Whether you’re an avid essential oil user who’s ready to expand into animal care, or you are just getting started, this blog is for you.

MY STORY ~ from Elizabeth Rose

Growing up on 5 acres in Arizona was the perfect childhood for a tomboy like myself. Wide open spaces to roam around, and animals. Over the course of ten years, my brothers and I collected desert turtles, bunnies, had a dog or two, and several horses. First, mother taught us children how to use essential oils for ourselves. We discovered that they work for all sorts of things like tummy aches, sun burns, scratches and scrapes, sore muscles (from digging ditches at the horse barn, haha!), bumps and bruises, stubbed toes, stuffy noses, and even an occasional bad attitude. Then we branched out and started using essential oils on our horses and dogs. We realized that the same way they support our skin and emotions, is how they can also support our animals. Fast forward a few years, and Young Living Essential Oils created the AnimalScents line of products specifically for animal care. They discovered what really works, took the guess work out, and now it is so easy to share with you!

So here we go! Introducing . . .

These premium AnimalScents essential oil blends come pre-diluted. So you can use them with peace of mind, knowing that just a few drops used topically on your animal will help them have the most enjoyable experience.

How Much To Use, And How Often

The AnimalScents oil blends can be applied directly on the affected area.

For a small dog, 1-2 drops is a good place to start per application. For a large dog, 2-4 drops may be most beneficial. For a horse, consider that their weight and size is many times larger than a human and they can benefit from several drops of oil used topically.

If you are applying an essential oil blend to a cut or scratch, consider using 1 drop for a 1-3 inch area of affected skin. The same goes for when you’re applying to an area of irritated or dry skin.

When using ParaGize, known for its soothing effects on the digestive area, apply topically to the stomach.

When using T-Away, known for its emotional support benefits, try applying behind the ears and down the spine, as well as inhaling.

Essential oils can be applied 1-3 times daily depending on the need.

NOTE: Generally, the AnimalScents blends do not need to be diluted. If skin irritation occurs, pause use. Avoid getting any essential oils in the eyes and avoid areas near private parts, as this may cause irritation. Avoid applying directly to stitches, as the oil may cause the stitching to come undone. For horses and dogs, generally it is okay if they try to lick an essential oil. If you’re prefer they not lick it, then apply to areas that are harder to reach, such down the spine.

The AnimalScents Ointment is a fabulous moisturizing and protective solution for areas of dry skin and areas that need to stay protected from flies and direct contact with dirt. It also works well to use after an application of essential oil as an extra protective, moistening layer.

Now let’s go ahead and look at specific uses and protocols for each of the AnimalScents products.

Uses and Protocols

BATH TIME MADE EASY

AnimalScents Shampoo is formulated with seven premium essential oils and other natural ingredients to gently cleanse and deodorize with plant-based ingredients that remove dirt and soften your pet's coat and skin without stripping away natural oils.

Formulated for all types of breeds and coats, Animal Scents Shampoo promotes healthy-looking skin and coat for your pet.

3-PART SYSTEM

Supports pet recovery from minor scrapes and scratches

Step 1 — PuriClean

This blend refreshes and prepares your pet's skin. Featuring the skin-improvement properties of Patchouli, Mountain Savory, and other premium essential oils, PuriClean supports your pet's well-being by cleansing and moisturizing dry, sensitive skin.

Step 2 — InfectAway

This premium essential oil blend helps guard against harmful contaminants while supporting your pet's irritated coat or skin.

Step 3 — MendWell

This blend supports your pet's natural healing process by soothing and moisturizing dry, sensitive, and distressed skin.

Each of these oils for steps 1-2-3 have the same usage recommendation:

  • Carefully apply according to the size and species of animal.

  • Additional dilution is recommended for smaller species.

  • Keep in a cool, dark place.

From personal experience, I like to use PuriClean, then wait about 10 minutes, followed by InfectAway, wait 10 minutes, and top with MendWell. The other application method is to use PuriClean on day one. PuriClean layered with InfectAway on day two. And PuriClean, layered with InfectAway, layered with MendWell on day 3. Then continue sing InfectAway and/or MendWell as the area continues healing.

MOISTURIZE AND PROTECT

Animal Scents Ointment is a protective, soothing salve designed specifically for pets. Infused with premium Tea Tree and Myrrh essential oils, this naturally derived, plant-based formula is gentle and safe for everyday use and can be applied anywhere on your pet's body to moisturize, soothe, and soften skin.

And guess what . . . since it’s good enough for the animals in my care, it’s good enough for me, too! When I ran out of the Rose Ointment once upon a time, I opted to try this and IT WORKED! It’s been a stable in my horse care kit and personal home kit for many years. It’s perfect for dry feet, hands, and cuticles.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

Essential oils can be very uplifting and supportive to the emotions when inhaled. They can help an animal overcome trauma and fear, relax, unwind, and become more grounded. By allowing an animal to smell an oil and give them time to process, you will notice a change in their demeanor. Animals are often times drawn to the specific single oil, or blend that their body, mind, and emotions need at the time.

Animal Scents T-Away contains a combination of Young Living's premium Trauma Life™, Harmony™, and Peace & Calming® essential oil blends. These blends work together to promote feelings of balance and grounding in your pet, while their aromas mix to help elevate disposition.
